About Eddie Stanfield

If you live on the Central Coast, you’ve probably seen it around town, it’s hard to miss. Bright yellow, with a classic “old school” look, local businessman Eddie Stanfield’s Checker Aerobus taxi is a resident icon. Carefully restored by Eddie himself, the Checker was a labor of love for him.

Eddie grew up with a passion for cars and like his father—a master mechanic and crew chief in the pits at Santa Maria Speedway—he fell in love with the sport of auto racing and with the cars themselves. He particularly loves classic and muscle cars. Eddie raced Sprint cars and motorcycles for a short time, winning several amateur awards for motorcycle racing throughout California. In 1985, his father was killed in a racing accident at the Speedway, but Eddie still follows auto sports closely and is now involved with promoting the memorial race that is held every year in his father’s honor.

Community Drive
When he is not spending time with his family, enjoying golf or sports, or working closely with a client, you will most likely find him giving back to his community in a number of ways. He is a past president of the board of directors for the Allan Hancock College Foundation and a member and past president of the Breakfast Rotary Club of Santa Maria. In addition, Eddie was instrumental in resurrecting “The Fishing Derby”—a day he remembers from his childhood. Eddie chairs a committee of Rotarians who organize and run this fishing event for kids each summer. Eddie’s Checker cab plays a part in his community work also. He donates its use for wine tours to raise money for charity, to take elementary students for pizza or ice cream as a prize for school contests or even to chauffeur high school students to their prom. Another event Eddie sponsors each year is the “Driven to Make a Difference” contest, in which junior high school students are invited to write an essay on the topic, “If you had a day to make a difference in my community, what would you do?” Eddie awards the winners with a cash prize and helps them implement their plan.
